Brave New World: Insights Into Innovation & Entrepreneurship

QUT Business School’s Fostering Executive Women Committee invites you to explore how innovation and entrepreneurship is and can be practised locally and globally.

Leading the conversation is Janelle Weissman, Executive Director of UN Women National Committee Australia, who will provide an overview of the unique challenges women around the world face in becoming entrepreneurs. Nyree McKenzie, Managing Director of Thought Bubble, will share insights from her entrepreneurial journey to found and lead a multi-award winning strategic communications firm. Professor Rowena Barrett, Head of QUT’s School of Management, will discuss the ways people can be innovative and what resources are available to support entrepreneurial venturing. This conversation will help you recognise what innovation is, how entrepreneurship can be practised and what’s needed to set yourself up for success.

Dr Rowena Barrett

Professor Rowena Barrett is an expert in thinking innovatively and being entrepreneurial to get things done. She leads the School of Management at QUT where excellent management, human resource management, entrepreneurship and innovation research is applied to create impact in the economy and society. With a real world focus to teaching and learning, the School’s graduates apply their skills in an array of managerial, entrepreneurial and human resource management roles locally, nationally and globally.

In her daily practice, Rowena draws on her research around people-orientated organisational issues to set strategy, manage resources and effectively lead in a challenging environment. She has published widely in leading academic journals and has successfully led teams that engaged productively with research users.

As a member of Team Queensland in the MIT REAP (Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program) Cohort 5, Rowena works collaboratively with personnel from the Queensland government, industry and university to deliver sustainable change to further spur innovation-driven entrepreneurship across the state. Rowena manages the delivery of the MIT Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp at QUT which has seen 250 people from 51 counties participate to date.

Rowena encourages all she works with to put the privilege of their education, learning, experience and employment to work for others, to be innovative and focus imaginatively on the future, and to take ownership of their actions and its outcomes.

Nyree McKenzie, Founder & CEO Bidhive / MD of Thought Bubble

Nyree McKenzie

Nyree McKenzie is the managing director of Thought Bubble, a multi-award winning strategic communications firm that advises public and private sector organisations on customers and stakeholder engagement projects, the evaluation of service effectiveness and efficiency, and strategic positioning and bidding to win significant contracts.

With no physical headquarters, Thought Bubble consultants collaborate in a ‘one team’ virtual environment across two continents and six cities to deliver 24/7 wrap around service to their clients which span government, not-for-profit, and global brands including Fortune 500 companies.

In 2017 Nyree founded Bidhive, a software startup that is disrupting the global tender and bid management industry. She recently completed the River City Labs accelerator and successfully secured an Ignite Ideas grant from the Queensland Government to help fast-track the platform’s commercialisation. Nyree is a former Fostering Executive Women mentee, a recipient of the FEW St. George Bank International Scholarship, and now a second-time mentor with the program. She is a graduate from QUT (MBus Marketing and BBus PR) and also an MIT Global Entrepreneurship Bootcamp alumnus.

This lively discussion will be moderated by Janelle Weissman, Executive Director of UN Women National Committee Australia, and will leave ample time for questions and networking.
